A couple of years ago one of my best friend’s daughter had a jewelry dilemma. She had tried repeatedly to have her ears pierced but they constantly became infected despite her best efforts to clean them daily, only wear gold, etc. She eventually let them close up but was sad that she couldn’t be like everyone else and wear fun earrings. Her Mom brought the problem to me and that is when I really discovered the ear cuff. My oldest daughter had been interested in them. I had even bought her an adorable little gold cuff with a small bow on it from Sloan boutique. I told my BFF that they should explore ear cuffs. They don’t require a piercing. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be moved to various parts of the ear. They can be stacked and look way more interesting than had she just settled on a simple stud.  Now, I too own a few simple cuffs made by Jenny Bird: a silver, a gold and a rose gold. I will add them to an outfit when I feel like it needs a little jazzing up. I will add it to my ear with the double piercing when I’m simply wearing a T-shirt so I don’t look too “Momish,”….a fond term my girls like to use on me.

Ear crawlers can be fun also. They go in your pierced ear, but climb up the side of your ear. The trick with these is to make sure they are not too heavy and can be adjusted with just a squeeze. I bought a couple of simple diamond and silver ones from Theodosia Jewelry, a Charleston designer one of my most stylist college buddies turned me on to! And then there’s multiple piercings. Depending on where you live, how you dress and what your Mama thinks, multiple piercings can either be good or bad. I am not a fan of more than two piercings on my daughters. Someone living in parts of the deep South may get strange looks if they have more than one. That being said, I think it can be an interesting addition to your accessory wardrobe if worn well. My oldest daughter wants a third. We are still talking about it. I’m at the point where as long as it’s not in her cartilage then I might go for it. As far as being against the cartilage piercings, well I guess I can’t get past how much that would hurt! I am a big proponent of expressing yourself. Try to be unique. If you already have a bunch of piercings, cool. I love that you are choosing to look a little different.  So consider an ear cuff, a double piercing or at a minimum an ear crawler from time to time. Your ears will thank you!

Oh by the way, here are a few ideas if you or your daughter are looking to jazz things up a bit. If you are looking for a little more inspiration, check out my page on Pinterest. I have an entire category devoted to these looks.
