My daughter that is a freshman in college had to start school virtually as many did. What she nor I expected however was the fact that she was also going to go through sorority Rush virtually…100% virtual without having set foot on campus yet. To a fashion loving girl who already had planned out most of her “party” outfits this sent her into panic mode. Those original dresses and skirts were no longer suitable because you need to see them with the purse and shoes she exclaimed! Between you and me, I agreed mostly. I think in light of  the Zoom calls we are all doing these days, it’s important to show your best self from the waist up. In addition, it’s important for interviews, sorority Rush or first impressions to tell a story about yourself from the waist up. So I gave it some thought as did she and we began our search online for tops that described her…interesting, fashionable, somewhat modest but not too. We looked for tops that accentuated her best features. We looked for colors that worked well with her blonde hair and blue eyes. We hit Zara, Shopbop, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Revolve, Anthropologie, KK Bloom and Free People. Additionally we searched google for blue tops, pink tops, one shoulder tops, etc. We also searched brands we liked on certain sites to see if they had the same top on their site. We went to stores like Boem, Sloan and Monkees in Charlotte. It took a lot of time and patience. I had to swallow my pride when I would show her a top that I loved and she gave me the thumbs down with a look like, “Are you kidding me?”. So below are some we settled on and some we would have if only they had her size. As far as what she wore on the bottom, well, let’s just say there were a lot of denim shorts both white and blue.

Thankfully my daughter got into the sorority she wanted. She was exhausted as they all were at the end of the process but she learned a lot and most importantly she felt confident in part because she was comfortable in her own skin and the new tops helped a little too.

So Oh by the Way, if you find yourself as a Mom or young adult needing some inspiration for all the Zoom calls you are making, below are a few picks I’ve had my eye on…for that random call or hopefully a dinner out with my hubby.  Let’s just hope he doesn’t notice my sweatpants!
