It usually goes something like this: “Mom, can you help me pick out something to wear?” If I’m free, I agree and we go into their closet. I show my daughter every single top, coat and sweater. Insults fly about why that particular item is ugly, wrong, too short, too long, itchy, doesn’t meet dress code or worse, too boring. She then gently grabs my arm and steers me out of her closet and says, “Maybe we should go look in your closet.” Now, I hear what you are thinking. Yes, this is an absolute compliment. Yes, I’ll miss these times as they are fleeting past me. Yes, I truly love that they love me … and my clothes. But hey, what about my needs? What about the times when I have a luncheon or a meeting and I need help picking out my outfit? Where are my girls then? Out. Wearing my clothes.

Luckily for me, I can peruse their closets on my own. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am too old to fit into their miniskirts, jeans and crop tops. I skip right over them. It could be depressing if I gave them too much of my attention. So, what are the things am I considering “borrowing” from my girls? Take a look at my list below and if you have a daughter at home, go check out her closet and see if you might find a way to freshen up your own wardrobe for the day.

  1. Sneakers – Luckily for me and even luckier for one of my daughters, we wear the same size shoe. She loves sneakers as much as me, so we have a variety to choose from. I’m not picking her running shoes, but she does have a cute black pair and a sparkly silver pair that I’ve happily worn!
  2. Layered necklaces – My other daughter, who doesn’t wear the same shoe size as me, is a collector. She has been collecting things her entire life. Plastic frogs and turtles, hotel room keys, Play-Doh, markers, you name it. Now that she’s older, she collects necklaces. Short, long, layered, beaded. When I need to fill in a space on my neck, her jewelry box is my go to.
  3. Eye Shadow Palettes – My girls watch A LOT of YouTube. They especially like to watch videos of makeup artists. They now know how to shade, contour, layer colors and fill in a brow. When I get sick of my makeup, I go into their bathroom and feel like I’m at Sephora. My girls are really good at knowing how those colors go on, so occasionally I will also ask for recommendations
  4. Self Tanner – I repeat. These girls watch A LOT of YouTube. They especially like to watch bloggers and makeup artists who try out new products. That being said, we have bought two self tanners based on YouTube recommendations. They go on well. They don’t smell horrible. They look natural as long as you follow the proper steps and use tons of moisturizer. I’ll tag them below in case you need that summer glow as we creep into Fall.
  5. Coats/Jackets/Outerwear – My girls’ high school is known for being absolutely freezing all year long. They are wearing coats even though it’s going to be 80 degrees outside. Therefore, we have a lot of fun jackets. I have been known to steal a jean jacket and their fuzzy coats. They like to wear them larger, so I know they’ll be my size and be a bit more fitted on me.

Oh By the Way, these are the self tanners you might consider using along with a couple of other items I’ve borrowed from their closets.
